YS Girls Running

YSHS/McKinney Girls in Cross Country and Track &Field

about us

YS Girls Running is a newly formed organization (June 2009) started by two young women who are active in Cross Country and Track & Field in the Yellow Springs School District. Reini Brickson is the Captain of the Girls’ Cross Country team and a year-round athlete competing in running and race-walking activities. Reini is joined by her running colleague, Paloma Wiggins, who’s also a year-round athlete and competes in Cross Country and Track & Field.

These girls join together with a strong desire to create a space in Yellow Springs school-based sports for girls to participate in ways which are meaningful to them. The founders of YS Girls Running independently organized around the goals of:

· increasing participation of YSHS/McKinney girls in running sports

· demonstrating and emphasizing how being part of running teams can be fun and build a sense of community

· developing broader support structures in the Yellow Springs community for young women participating in sports

In order to fulfill the goals of their organization, there is also a need to generate funds through a variety of activities, some of which the organizer’s hope will become self-sustaining and foster encouragement for community events for women and girls. One such activity is an annual event called “simply women. 5k run/walk for women and girls.”
